The renovation work on the former Nicolson Street Church and the opening of the Southside Community Centre was the result of a long campaign by the South Side Association to have a meeting place in the heart of the South Side’s main thoroughfare.
A steering committee involving Dorothy Finlay, John Ross, Maggie Wilson, Linda Femister, Effie Wilkie and Liz Turnbull amongst them, put a great amount of time and effort into the planning and preparation for a project to begin.
In December 1986, The Community Centre was opened by George Foulkes MP who, whilst chair of the Lothian Regional Council’s Education Committee, had supported the procurement for the necessary resources for the project. Former regional councillors Willy Roe and Keith Geddes were also very influential to the successful completion of the project.
